One hazard which is often disregarded except in tropical and sub tropical climates is damage to the skin caused by radiation from the sun and in particular ultra violet rays. The first reaction of the skin to doses of radiation is to form protective pigments in the skin, which in mild cases gives the appearance of a sun tan, but it takes very little overdose on a hot and sunny day to see the skin start to burn, which will cause the skin to redden and eventually start to peel. Except in severe cases which may require medical treatment, sun burn is generally treated with a range of ointments or oils which prevent the dry skin from cracking and or forming wrinkles. Repeated exposure to excessive amounts of sunlight can eventually lead to changes in the DNA structure of the skin cells, and much damage, including possible cancers, is done. Also people fail to appreciate that you do not need direct sunlight in order to get burned. If you go on a skiing holiday and even on a cloudy day - with the ambient sun light reflected in the snow, and in rarified mountain air - you may be surprised to find, at the end of a day's skiing that you have got sun burn on your face. When you go out into exposed areas such as when fishing at sea from a boat, a day at the beach or if hiking in the country it will prevent sun and wind damage to your skin to wear a suitable sunscreen lotion or a light moisturizer.
Other environmental hazards include pollutants which come from industrial processes and emissions from motor vehicles, and these may get into the pores of the skin, and prevent the skin from "breathing' properly, cause damage to the skin, and signs of premature aging including a wrinkled appearance. Using deep cleansers for the skin and moisturizers helps to reduce the effects of pollution. In the more personal home environment, toxic products used in the manufacture of furniture and fittings can contribute to poor health, the use of chemical products for cleaning and washing clothes can also be irritating to the skin. Many cleaning products are made from petro-chemical derivatives which should be replaced with organic products which are certified to be safe to use. Tobacco smoke is known to cause discoloration of the skin, and has harmful side effects - tobacco if smoked, should be smoked outside the house so that residues do not cling to fabrics and utensils in the home. Drawing on cigarettes is known to cause the lip muscles to tighten and this can lead directly to lines and wrinkles around the mouth, and give an aged appearance. Pollutants can damage cell membranes and lead to irreversible skin disorders and even alter genetic material. While for the most part, exposure to general pollution cannot be avoided there is a lot that can be done in the home to use environmentally friendly materials, cleaning products and cosmetics that will reduce the stress on your body of having to rid itself on a daily basis of an overload of toxic substances, and keeping the skin clean, moisturized and hydrated is the best preventative measure against damage by pollutants and resultant sagging and wrinkling of the skin.
